What Does The Process Look Like?
Backfilling procedure often consists of a few simple tasks performed in repetition. However, the first step to any backfilled foundation or trench in Cache Valley consists of selecting the correct types of soil and dirt. Depending on various factors such as the type of soil and height of the surrounding water table, mixes of rock and dirt are selected. This mix is then laid down in layers, otherwise known as “lifts”.
Each lift is ideally between 4″-6″ thick, but is occasionally as thick as 12″ depending on the area being filled. For example, plumbing or wiring lifts will be thinner in order to prevent breaks, whereas backfilling a foundation can often be done with thicker layers. After each lift has been placed, it must be compacted and watered.
This basically means that stress and water are added to the soil in order to help it settle and compact. The methods of compacting soil by stress vary, but generally consist of either applying a large weight over the area or using a mechanically driven plate or hammer that repeatedly pounds the ground and applies force. However, other methods consist of “kneading” the soil, gyrating, dropping a large weight suddenly onto the area, or simply rolling over it with a heavy cylinder transported by a large machine. |
Water is then ran into the soil to help it settle further and expose any faults. This can be done in a variety of ways, whether it’s with a garden hose or a water jet that shoots underneath and helps the soil settle further. This process is often performed and then backfill dirt or gravel is added, compacted, and watered down again until it matches the height of the existing soil surrounding it.
